Mississippi LGBT Rural Summit

The final agenda for the 2015 Mississippi LGBT Rural Summit is available!  Make plans to attend this wonderful event this friday at Millsaps College in Jackson!

Mississippi Newspaper Bans Same-Sex Wedding Announcements

Mississippi’s third-largest news / media company has taken a bold stance against equality.

Journal, Inc. is the owner of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal newspaper along with eight weekly community papers, the Mississippi Business Journal and West 10 media group in suburban Memphis.

Recently, Clay Foster, the CEO and Publisher of Journal, Inc. wrote an article denouncing the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage. In addition to publishing his own opinion, Mr. Foster has ordered all staff and writers to remain silent on any topic related to LGBT equality.

When Equality Mississippi contacted the Journal offices, we were told that a policy decision had been made to refuse to publish any same-sex wedding announcements while continuing to publish any opposite-sex wedding announcements.

The Board of Directors of Journal, Inc. needs to know that this is not the image Mississippi needs.  Please send them a polite note asking them to bring Mississippi into an era of full equality.

We want to hear your Mississippi LGBTQ story!

StoryCorps is coming to Jackson from February 5 to March 6, 2015, and they asked us at Equality Mississippi to help them reach out to Mississippi’s LGBTQ community prior to ensure that LGBTQ voices are heard.
